How to use tallow on your face

Warm a small amount of tallow between clean fingertips until it melts, then press it gently into freshly washed, slightly damp skin. That's the whole trick. Tallow is simple to use — the only common mistake is using too much. Here's the exact routine, morning and night.

The five-step routine

  • 1. Cleanse. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat almost dry — leave your skin a little damp.
  • 2. Take a little. Scoop an amount about the size of a small pea. It looks like too little; it isn't.
  • 3. Warm it. Rub it between clean fingertips for a few seconds until it turns from a balm to a soft oil.
  • 4. Press, don't drag. Press it over your cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin, then smooth outward. Don't forget lips and the back of the hands.
  • 5. Wait. Give it a minute to sink in before makeup or sleep. Add a touch more only if a spot still feels thirsty.

Morning vs. night

  • Morning: a thin layer under sunscreen or makeup. Less is more — you want dewy, not greasy.
  • Night: a slightly more generous layer as your last step, to seal in moisture while you sleep.

How much should you use?

Start with a pea-sized amount for the whole face. Tallow is concentrated, so a 2 fl oz jar lasts most people several months. If your skin ever feels heavy or looks shiny an hour later, you used a little too much — scale back next time.

Common mistakes

  • Too much at once. The number-one issue. A little, often, beats a lot, rarely.
  • Bone-dry skin. Apply to slightly damp skin so the tallow seals in water.
  • Rushing. Let it absorb before layering anything on top.

A small daily ritual

Used this way, Honeyed Tallow becomes a quiet minute at the start and end of the day — five honest ingredients, warmed between your hands. "You anoint my head with oil" (Psalm 23:5). New to tallow? Start with Is beef tallow good for your skin?
